I have decided to relaunch jimmyzhou.com as a place to blog. I spent much more time years ago creating a site on Drupal, but my goal this time around is to get a blog up and running with minimal work. Since I already own the domain and pay for hosting, I might as well make the most of it. The set up is very simple.
CMS – WordPress
It has been a couple of years since I had to install a WordPress Instance. I was surprised on how easy it has gotten. The only complication I had was getting this site to work not using the default docroot that my hosting company set up. This was necessary as I have other production sites on the same account. If i were just setting up 1 main site, I would not have even needed to touch 1 line of code.
Design – SuperAds Lite
Selected this theme from the wordpress theme search not because of the built in ad integration, but because I think it looks nice. I love minimalist web designs. My old site looked similar as well. I should also point out that I’m using a wordpress plugin for adsense instead of the default theme integration. It has more options and works well.
Hosting – Greengeeks
I have been using GreenGeeks for 5+ years. It is a solid company and their support is very good. While setting up the site, I did have to specifically ask for ssh access, which they grant to any member that asks. My affiliate link here. I never used any other big hosting company, but I know others that have, and they all are pretty much the same. Stick with a big company like Bluehost, Dreamhost, Greengeeks. Greengeeks might be on the smaller company side compared to the other big shared hosting sites, but what can I say, the fact that they are Green got me.
